Client Overview

The client is an “Industry 4.0” provider of manufacturing execution system (MES) software. Its platform collects and organises data from assembly line and factory equipment. Hardware and software used in manufacturing settings often send disconnected data signals. The client’s software unifies these signals for straightforward, efficient data access and analysis.

All individual solutions, though based on the same underlying application, are customised to meet the specific needs of clients.

The company operates in a wide range of industries, including aerospace, pharmaceuticals and automotive. Remaining competitive demands that the client’s solutions offer the very latest functionality and can handle the growing complexity of modern production lines.

The Problem: Catering to Evolving Client Requirements

This MES software provider caters to clients with complex needs across a diverse set of industries. Client production processes can range from the manufacture of individual components to the full assembly of a finished product.

The client’s platform, which is always customised to meet individual client needs, handles a number of important tasks. These include data unification and analysis from diverse inputs, presentation of data in a human-readable format, and notifications about equipment issues and unforeseen events.

To remain competitive, the company must provide the most current technologies to its users. This demands an ongoing commitment to implementing advanced integration, analytics and security features. Failure to innovate would almost certainly mean lost customers and revenue.

Upgrade Platform Features and Infrastructure

The client approached Sigli seeking wide-scale upgrades to its client-facing software and internal development architecture.

Clients use their own software customisations and the company required “meta programming” tools to allow for the fast creation of tailored modules like database entities, communication protocols and graphical interfaces.

The client also wanted to make its MES platform accessible online, not just via local networks, while adding new communication and security features.

The upgraded system needed to be able to handle the following tasks:

Convert input telemetry signals from dissimilar equipment into a unified form.

Communicate between all manufacturing equipment and the backend system.

Send real-time updates to the database within manufacturer parameters.

Build dynamic reports in table and graphic formats.

Ensure that terminals are always accessible online for users.

Send notifications to operator devices when necessary.

Allow clients to extend the platform with additional code.

The Process: Full-Stack Portal Development

The project ran from January 2022 to August 2022, and one full-stack software engineer was assigned.

Sigli followed a six-step process:

Analysis of existing architecture design and functionality.

Enhancement of communication security protocols and elaboration of identity and access management (IAM) systems.

Improvements to object-relational mapping (ORM) layer in light of new features.

Updates to scaffolding tools used for custom code generation for client solutions.

Integration with Microsoft Graph API to incorporate Azure AD calendar and mailbox functionality.

Building of auxiliary mobile native utilities (with Apache Cordova) for system management.

Project Team and Management Overview

Communication

Communication was via regular monthly meetings. Email and messaging apps allowed for contact between meetings.

Project Management

Sigli used the scrum methodology, with a Product Owner (PO) as the project manager and main point of contact with the client.

The Results: An Expanded Feature-Set and Faster Client Code Deployment

Sigli delivered an MES platform with several distinctive features that separated it from competitors. Increased customisation flexibility also meant that the MES software provider would be able to deliver customer solutions quickly, another key business advantage.

Here were the key project outcomes:

Improved internal infrastructure at the client company for faster client code deployments.

Expanded app analytics, security, automation and notification features.

Updated communication protocols so that end-users could access the server app via the internet, removing reliance on local networks and VPN workarounds.

Implemented an IAM system for a base of over a hundred thousand users, with no issues detected.

Sigli completed multiple projects, including the development of a client web portal and an identity verification system. The industrial software space is a tough neighbourhood and competition is fierce. Having access to a team of developers that could deliver quality features on time gives us a huge advantage
